Form-Based Codes Institute at Smart Growth America

Beaufort Boundary Street Redevelopment District

The street-type form-based code establishes a hierarchy of streets with standards presented consistently using many unambiguous, accurate and clearly labeled diagrams.  Standards for each street type include building placement, building form, and street sections. Information common to all streets is presented separately as General Design Standards, Building Elements and Architectural Standards. The code promotes a mixed-use physical environment to further enhance the economic and cultural success of Boundary Street and contiguous areas. In September 2005 the City created the Master Plan for the Boundary Street Redevelopment District through a design charrette process involving the community and a team of design professionals. The City of Beaufort adopted the Boundary Street form-based regulations in 2007 reflecting the existing character of Beaufort and the surrounding region.
